A great choice for smaller rooms, the 23-inch Toshiba 23HL85 LCD TV helps you save space while enjoying vibrantly colorful high-definition television programming. It features a built-in, 181-channel NTSC TV tuner for standard broadcasts, and can receive high-definition (ATSC) broadcasts from an optional HD tuner. The 23HL85 makes it easy to connect to brilliant imagery with its component and HDMI connections, and it can also double as a PC monitor. This set also offers Toshiba's exclusive HD Dynamic Contrast function, which provides a sharper, deeper image with rich colors and a more life-like image.

The 23HL85 has a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio--perfect for high-definition telecasts and DVD movies--1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and 500:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) It supports 720p (HDTV), 480p (EDTV), and 480i (SDTV) video formats. The GameTimer feature allows you to set the television to shut off after a specified period of time, and stay off until a lockout key code is entered. Other features include tri-lingual on-screen menus (English, French, Spanish), V-Chip parental controls, sleep timer, channel return, and channel labeling.

The HD Dynamic Contrast feature increases Contrast and Color Saturation to create deep, rich images, analyzing both the dark and bright areas of the picture, and separately optimizing the dynamic range in each area of the picture.

The 23HL85 has two stereo speakers that provide 5 watts of power per channel (for 10 watts of total power) and SRS WOW virtual surround sound. The StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. This helps to eliminate the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels. I bought this for a bedroom TV and the picture was excellent: in terms of color and sharpness with all inputs. Dvd's were outstanding. The controls were flexible for setup. However on the negative side the remote was annoying: it had to be be pointed carefully and exactly for it to work. The sound was poor, suitable only for voices at low volume, films and sports were not pleasant in terms of sound. Possibly all 23" LCD's are similiar because of the tiny speakers. Note: I am fussy abouut sound. I returned this for a 26" LCD which is much more satisfactory.

The Toshiba 23HL85 looks great in my living room. But although the picture quality is generally very good, it is aggrevating when my attention is occasionally drawn to the pixels that have been stuck since I took it out of the box. LCD TV manufacturers and sellers want you to accept this as par for the course. My advice- do more research than I did and test your TV in a store before you buy it.
